10SAMS: From Screening to Community

Long before the lights dimmed and the animations came alive at the 10SAMS Screening & Mingle on a warm summer evening in 2025 (📍March 29 at Chaloem La Art House, to be exact), something equally powerful had already taken root — a spark of community.

🎨☕ Before Screenings, There Was Listening 👥

On January 6, in the cozy corners of Circle Cafe & Co-working Space, over 20 independent animators gathered for a heart-to-heart session hosted by Klower° (Keawalee Warutkomain and Wardphan Diloksambandh). The meetup unfolded into a moment of truth, where unspoken feelings were finally voiced:

Being an animator in Thailand often means creating in isolation — unseen, unsupported, and misunderstood.

Opportunities to simply sit in a room with fellow animators are incredibly rare — let alone talk shop, sharing struggles, or finding collaborators across fields. Without access to other creative professionals, like musicians, sound designers, directors, or researchers, many projects remain solo efforts with disappointingly limited outcomes.

🧩 And then there’s the bigger picture:
Most independent artists are navigating real financial hardship, with little to no access to meaningful support. Government campaigns and funding are often out of reach, favoring those aligned with state-approved, conservative narratives. The result? Thai animation is often dismissed by the public as just for kids — or worse, as a tool for propaganda. 🧸📢

It was clear that this community — raw, brave, and brilliant — deserved more. More visibility. More space to grow. More chances to collaborate, challenge the norm, and tell their stories in their own unique way!

🎉 The Dream Team Behind 10SAMS 🧑‍🎨💡

Out of that heartfelt meeting — and with the incredible support from the French Team Fund Creation – Thailand 2024–2025 — a crew began to form.

Klower° recruited artist friends to join the team as the core community members who will be working on the event preluding the SiamANIMA Festival, our first international independent animation festival of Thailand!

Together with these pioneers (Klowerº &FRIENDS) — Ice, Aum, Belle, and Jaijai — and with guidance and support from many other FRIENDS and advisors, including Nakhon Chaisri and Than Thantawan (with whom we have collaborated since the Beyond Animation 2022 and still helps us along the SiamANIMA journey), and Thanut Rujitanont (Graphy Animation), one of the SiamANIMA’s core team who always sends help despite the time difference in Australia — we weren’t just organizing a festival for eccentric 10-second animation films (10SAMS), but building a home for stories that don’t fit the mold. 🏡✨

🏛️ A New Creative Ally: Chaloem La Art House Joins the Journey 🎨✨

Nestled in the heart of Bangkok, just steps from Ratchathewi BTS Station, the newly founded Chaloem La Art House became a true partner in the 10SAMS story. Led by Miss Pumarin and Mr. Paul Wilkinson, the gallery shares a deep commitment to nurturing independent creators and giving bold ideas the space to flourish. And animation, well…, has always been one of Miss Pumarin’s favorite art forms! 🌱💡

Another happy accident was when the two hosts discovered that Belle (Pattama Homrod) — the director of their beloved Thai animation, “Little Miss Dung Jai” — was part of the organizing team. Belle’s work also featured in our “Flavours of Thai Independent Animation (FOTA)“, making the connection feel all the more serendipitous.

With open arms and hearts, Chaloem La Art House offered their venue free of charge for the 10SAMS Screening & Mingle night. The gallery even gave out a special gift to the community by sponsoring an exclusive award: the winning animations would be featured on a prominent electronic billboard right by Ratchathewi Station. What a thrilling opportunity for an independent artist to shine in one of Bangkok’s busiest spots! 🏙️🎉

This partnership is simply a beautiful reminder of what can happen when art spaces and artists come together with shared values.

Magic, momentum, and more space for feisty little voices. 💖

📩 An Open Call with Open Arms: “YUM” Sparks 143 Animations! 🍋✨🍜

When 10SAMS called for 10-second animations under the theme “YUM,” no one knew just how deliciously diverse the responses would be. The theme was left wide open — no definitions, no limitations — and the creative community took it and ran. 🎨🎬

To the team’s utter delight, 143 submissions poured in — 134 from across Thailand and 11 from international artists, including entries from Indonesia, Myanmar, Estonia, the USA, Germany, Greece, China, Hong Kong, and Australia. 🌏💌

From Bangkok to Buriram, Chiang Rai to Songkhla, submissions arrived from 27 provinces, reflecting a nationwide hunger for spaces where independent animation can be seen, felt, and celebrated. 🍲💥

Each entry carried its own flavor from whimsical and hilarious, to tender, surreal, and technically stunning. Creators ranged in age, experience, and artistic background, proving that animation truly knows no bounds when it comes to expression.

🏆 Flavors of Recognition: The 10SAMS Awards 🏅🌶️

True to its spirit of inclusion and play, 10SAMS introduced a multi-layered award system that balanced the thoughtful eye of a jury with the energy of audience participation.

🧑‍⚖️ Jury Awards (by the 10SAMS Team):
• 🥣 Onion Anion YUM – For heartwarming, profound, and umami-rich storytelling
• 💃 Tangy Tango YUM – For unconventional, bold storytelling with exceptional creativity
• 🔥 Zaap & Spicy YUM – For outstanding technical animation, unique style, and rhythm

🗳️ Popular Vote Awards:
• “Mitchalyn Gin-Jai Award” (a playful nod to the Michelin Guide) – Determined by attendees’ votes via voting slips included in their welcome packs.

💖 In addition to the main awards, each of the six 10SAMS core members selected a Special Mention, giving a heartfelt nod and commentary to entries that personally moved or inspired them.

And in true DIY, grassroots fashion, every trophy and award plate was handmade by the 10SAMS team — a symbol of care, creativity, and community spirit. 🛠️🏆

ในค่ำคืนอันอบอุ่นช่วงฤดูร้อนปี 2025 ก่อนที่แสงไฟจะดับลงและแอนิเมชันจะมีชีวิตขึ้นมาในงาน 10SAMS Screening & Mingle (📍จัดขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 29 มีนาคม ณ เฉลิมหล้า อาร์ตเฮาส์) สิ่งหนึ่งที่งอกงามขึ้นมาก่อนหน้านั้นแล้ว คือ “จุดเริ่มต้นของชุมชนเล็กๆ”

🎨☕ ก่อนได้ดูหนัง เราได้รับฟังกันและกัน 👥

วันที่ 6 มกราคม ในคาเฟ่ Circle Cafe & Co-working Space แสนอบอุ่น นักสร้างแอนิเมชันอิสระกว่า 20 คนได้มาร่วมพูดคุยกันในกิจกรรมที่จัดโดย Klower° (เกวลี วรุตม์โกเมน และวาดฝันย์ ดิลกสัมพันธ์) การพบปะครั้งนั้นกลายเป็นโอกาสปลดปล่อยความรู้สึกลึกๆ ในใจที่ไม่เคยถูกออกมา ให้เป็นถ้อยคำว่า…

นักสร้างแอนิเมชันในไทยต้องทำงานอย่างโดดเดี่ยว

ไม่มีใครมองเห็น ไร้การสนับสนุน แถมยังถูกเข้าใจผิดอีกด้วย

โอกาสแค่จะได้นั่งอยู่ในห้องเดียวกับเพื่อนร่วมสายงานยังหาได้ยาก นับประสาอะไรกับการได้พูดคุย แบ่งปันประสบการณ์ หรือหาคนร่วมทำงานข้ามสาขา หลายโครงการแอนิเมเตอร์ต้องทำงานคนเดียว เพราะเข้าไม่ถึงผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านอื่น ๆ เช่น นักดนตรี ซาวด์ดีไซเนอร์ ผู้กำกับ หรือนักวิจัย

🧩 และยิ่งเมื่อมองในภาพรวมแล้ว…
ศิลปินอิสระส่วนมากยังต้องเผชิญกับความลำบากทางการเงิน ไม่มีช่องทางเข้าถึงการสนับสนุนที่เป็นรูปธรรม นโยบายรัฐหรือทุนสนับสนุนส่วนมากก็เน้นเฉพาะกลุ่มที่นำเสนอเรื่องราวสอดคล้องกับแนวคิดอนุรักษ์นิยม ผลก็คือ แอนิเมชันไทยมักถูกมองว่าเป็นแค่ของสำหรับเด็ก หรือไม่ก็เป็นแค่เครื่องมือโฆษณาชวนเชื่อ แต่ตอนนี้เราเห็นชัดเจนแล้วว่า ชุมชนนี้ที่ทั้งมีไอเดียสดใหม่ กล้าหาญ และยอดเยี่ยม สมควรได้รับสิ่งที่มากกว่านั้น ซึ่งก็คือพื้นที่ที่คนจะได้เห็นผลงานของเรา พื้นที่ให้เราได้เติบโต และโอกาสที่เราจะได้เล่าเรื่องในแบบของตัวเอง

จากบทสนทนาที่จริงใจ บวกกับการสนับสนุนจาก French Team Fund Creation – Thailand 2024–2025 ทีมเล็ก ๆ ก็เริ่มก่อตัวขึ้น

Klower° ชวนศิลปินเพื่อนๆ มาเป็นทีมหลักในการจัดกิจกรรมก่อนงานเทศกาล SiamANIMA เทศกาลแอนิเมชันอิสระนานาชาติครั้งแรกของประเทศไทย!

กลุ่ม Klowerº & FRIENDS ได้แก่ ไอซ์ อุ้ม เบลล์ และไจ๋ไจ๋ พร้อมด้วยแรงสนับสนุนจากเพื่อนและที่ปรึกษาหลายคน เช่น นคร ชัยศรี และธันย์ ธันตะวัน (ที่เราร่วมงานกันมาตั้งแต่ Beyond Animation 2022) รวมถึงธนัท รุจิธนนท์ (Graphy Animation) สมาชิกหลักของทีม SiamANIMA ที่ยังส่งแรงมาช่วยจากออสเตรเลีย แม้ว่าโซนเวลาเราจะต่างกัน เราไม่ได้แค่จัดงานฉายหนังสั้น 10 วินาทีสุดสร้างสรรค์ (10SAMS) แต่กำลังสร้าง “บ้าน” ให้กับเรื่องราวนอกกรอบเหล่านี้ 🏡✨

ใจกลางกรุงเทพฯ ใกล้ BTS ราชเทวี “เฉลิมหล้า อาร์ตเฮาส์” แกลเลอรีเปิดใหม่ได้เข้ามาร่วมเป็นพันธมิตรสำคัญในเรื่องราวของ 10SAMS ภายใต้การดูแลของคุณภุมรินทร์ และคุณพอล วิลคินสัน ที่มีใจสนับสนุนศิลปินอิสระและเปิดพื้นที่ให้กับไอเดียใหม่ๆ สุดท้าทาย แถมแอนิเมชันก็เป็นศิลปะแขนงโปรดของคุณภุมรินทร์อยู่แล้วด้วย! 🌱💡

ความบังเอิญอีกอย่างคือ เจ้าของแกลเลอรีทั้งสองเพิ่งรู้ว่าเบลล์ (ปัทมา หอมรอด) ผู้กำกับแอนิเมชันเรื่อง “Little Miss Dung Jai” ที่พวกเขาชอบ ก็คือหนึ่งในทีมผู้จัดงานนี่เอง ผลงานของเบลล์ยังถูกคัดเลือกไปอยู่ในชุด “Flavours of Thai Independent Animation (FOTA)” ด้วย

เมื่อ 10SAMS ประกาศรับผลงานแอนิเมชัน 10 วินาทีภายใต้ธีม “YUM” ไม่มีใครคาดคิดว่าความอร่อยที่ได้จะหลากหลายขนาดนี้ ธีมของพวกเราเน้นเปิดกว้าง ไม่จำกัดนิยาม ไม่ตีความล่วงหน้า และแอนิเมเตอร์ทั้งหลายก็จัดให้ ตามแต่จินตนาการบรรเจิดจะพาไป 🎨🎬

พวกเราดีใจกันสุดๆ ที่มีผลงานส่งเข้าร่วมถึง 142 เรื่อง ในนี้มี 134 เรื่องจากทั่วไทย และ 11 เรื่องจากศิลปินต่างชาติ ทั้งอินโดนีเซีย เมียนมา เอสโตเนีย สหรัฐฯ เยอรมนี กรีซ จีน ฮ่องกง และออสเตรเลีย 🌏💌

แต่ละเรื่องมีรสเฉพาะตัว ทั้งตลก ติงต๊อง ละเมียดละไม เหนือจริง หรือเทคนิคแพรวพราว
