Japan Spotlight: Friction — Curated by Movop

An animated drawing created directly on the walls of a dorm room at the University of Tokyo. Developed over a year, a few seconds a day, it reflects shifting relations between inside and outside, painting and window. A pipe organ evokes the building as a resonating instrument.

For three days, I left my usual life behind and traveled somewhere unfamiliar with only one plan to make something. I did not know what it would be. I simply let the place guide the process of creation.

This work was born in the wake of the September 11 attacks in 2001 and was compelled by an irresistible inner urge. Two tons of clay were placed in the artist’s studio and his daily life was documented. In light of Japan–U.S. relations, the piece inverts the roles of people and clay (master and slave).

I treat a sequence of video frames as a 3D object, adding time as depth to X and Y, and then extract arbitrarily oriented cross-sections from this object in order to observe wave properties that unfold continuously not only through space but also through time.
These works explore hidden rhythms in nature through filming and digital technology.

I put my faith in creation through pure manual reflex, leaving any thought processes behind. Where will this all lead us? And how will it end? It's all pure thrill and excitement!
